According to the Environmental Working Group: The ideal sunscreen would completely block the UV rays that cause sunburn, immune suppression and damaging free radicals.  In other words a sunscreen that works on two levels: protection (sunscreen) plus prevention (skincare).

No sunscreen on the market met all of these criteria, until March 2011 when 3rd Rock Sunblock hit the market after ten years in the making! 3rd Rock Sunblock was developed by a PhD Chemical Engineer with leading Kinesiologists (Dr. John and Walter Schmitt) and Dermatologist (Dr. Eric Bernstein). I often say to my daughter Kaitlin "Let Your Sun Shine Out", let the world see how beautiful you are on the inside.  Here, with "Let the Sunshine In", I'm referring to the importance of getting enough vitamin D, the fat soluble "sunshine vitamin", through sun exposure and supplementation.

Remember when you were a kid and counted down the days until summer vacation.  The morning announcement at our house today was that there are 11 & 1/2 days left until summer break.  When I asked my kids what they think of when they hear the summer break they responded with: "no  homework, swimming, playing,  sprinklers,  watermelon, popsicles, no homework, more time with friends, and no homework."  I can see why they get so excited - that sounds like a blast to me too!

Another school year has gone by, and it's hard to believe that this was the last week of school for my daughter. Summer is upon us, along with warm, sunny days and the possibility of sunburn. With fair skin and freckles, my daughter and I have to be vigilant about preventing sunburn.
