Looking to help your child maintain a healthy blood sugar level? Here's your holistic prescription:
One: Replace processed carbohydrates (sugar and processed grains) with Colorful Carbs especially vegetables and low-glycemic fruit. A review, published in the British Medical Journal, looked at six studies on links between diabetes and the consumption of fruits and vegetables and found eating an extra serving a day of vegetables like spinach, cabbage, and broccoli reduced adults' risk of type 2 diabetes by 14 percent. These studies covered over 200,000 adults in the United States, China and Finland. See why green leafy vegetables are vegetables are key!
Two: Balance every meal and snack - include Colorful Carbs, Friendly Fats and Powerful Proteins. Combining Colorful Carbs with fat and protein slows down sugar absorption, preventing the sugar rush and crash. Let your child pick out a new vegetable at the store each week and help prepare it. Make a game out of eating colors with our Color Chart. Serve some raw, some cooked and eat them with a Friendly Fat or Powerful Protein to keep the meal and/or snack balanced - See Recipe for a Healthy Meal Chart. Use our One Easy System to help you plan, shop and prep foods that will help your child be nourished and satiated without added sugars and processed grains.
Three: Exercise! Exercise improves sugar metabolism by improving insulin sensitivity and it also reduces belly fat. Ideally, your child should exercise at least 1 hour daily, where they are breathing "hard", but not hardly breathing! Adding interval training and strength training further improves metabolism, especially helping your child burn calories and energy when they are NOT exercising.
Four: Add powerful anti-inflammatory supplements such as probiotics, cod liver oil with vitamin D, and a multi-vitamin/mineral with phytonutrients and anti-oxidants. Probiotics, the healthy bacteria, reduce overall inflammation (immune activation) by re-balancing gut flora. In addition to decreasing inflammation, cod liver oil and bio-available vitamin/minerals reduce oxidative stress and support healthy carbohydrate metabolism. Research shows vitamin D helps balance blood sugar. Now research also shows pregnant women who optimize their vitamin D levels can decrease their children's risk for type 1 diabetes! Optimizing your child's vitamin D level in the early years has shown the same decrease in risk for type 1 diabetes. Yet another reason why cod liver oil with vitamin D is a must-have supplement for our children!
