Gluten and Dairy Can Be a REAL Problem, Part 2

We’ve already talked a lot about REAL food, and the right REAL food for YOU. But just to recap: There’s no one right diet for everyone. Food needs to be tailored to meet your needs. While lab testing is ideal to tailor your child’s diet, it’s not always possible due to cost and practitioner accessibility. Our Menu Plan Program (grab your FREE trial below) will walk you through a 1, 2, 3 phased approach to tailoring your child’s diet, including how to eliminate the most common foods stressing children with health issues: gluten, dairy, and sugar. We’ll cover sugar later (woot, woot!), for now let’s recap the deal-e-o with gluten and dairy.

Gluten and Dairy Can Be a REAL Problem

Gluten and dairy can be REAL (grown as nature intended); they can also be highly packaged and processed. But swallow this, even the highest quality gluten and dairy can cause your child problems in 2 ways:

  1. Her immune system overreacts to gluten and/or dairy and/or
  2. Her digestive system can’t break down gluten and/or dairy

Let’s examine how the digestive system can’t break down gluten and/or dairy. I cover how the immune system overreacts to gluten and/or dairy in Gluten and Dairy Can Be a REAL Problem, Part 1

Undigested Proteins: Gut & Brain Disrupters

The purpose of our digestive system is to digest (breakdown) and absorb the food we eat, so we can feed our cells. Pretty basic. These are the cells that make up our heart, brain, liver, kidney, etc. Pretty important I’d say! But what happens when your digestive army goes on strike? Hmmm. Let’s find out.

Our digestive army includes a group of proteins called enzymes. Enzymes are eating machines, munching and breaking down our food into smaller micronutrients so they can “squeeeze” through our intestinal wall and get to our hungry cells. But sometimes there’s just not enough enzymes to get the job done!

You likely know someone with lactose intolerance (not enough lactase enzyme), which translates into some not so pleasant symptoms a half an hour to 2 hours after eating dairy. It sort of feels like someone blowing up your intestines with a bicycle pump. Whoa! Not good. Lactose is the sugar that occurs naturally in dairy. So it’s a problem with digesting dairy sugar.

It’s pretty easy to tell if you’re lactose intolerant because your symptoms are so closely related in time to eating dairy. But when it’s a problem with digesting the dairy or gluten protein (not sugar), the symptoms are delayed like food intolerances, making it impossible to discover if the gluten and/or dairy you’re eating is having a hard time being digested.

Who cares if gluten and dairy is properly digested anyway? I know, it seems a little ridiculous to be so meticulous. But for some people, improperly digested gluten and dairy can produce all kinds of symptoms from constipation to a “foggy-mind”. I once had a child describe removing gluten and dairy “lifted a cloud from her head”. She could finally think clearly!

Get tested.

Testing (see below) is ideal to tailor your child’s diet, but it’s not always possible due to cost and practitioner accessibility. We’re working on building a practitioner database for you, so stay tuned! In the meantime…

Gluten and Dairy Can Be a REAL Problem, Part 1

To boost health and happiness, eat REAL food. But sometimes, a lot of times, it’s not enough to eat REAL food, we need to eat the right REAL food. Why? Because even REAL food can be bad for you! What?!?!? Yes. It’s true. The most common foods I see stressing children’s health are gluten, dairy, and sugar. Let’s start with gluten and dairy, we’ll cover sugar later (wah wah).

Gluten and Dairy Can Be a REAL Problem

Gluten and dairy can be REAL (grown as nature intended); they can also be highly packaged and processed. But swallow this, even the highest quality gluten and dairy can cause your child problems in 2 ways:

  1. His immune system overreacts to gluten and/or dairy and/or
  2. His digestive system can’t break down gluten and/or dairy

Let’s examine how the immune system overreacts to gluten and/or dairy. I cover how the digestive system can’t break down gluten and/or dairy in Gluten and Dairy Can Be a REAL Problem, Part 2

Foods that Inflame: Allergies and Intolerances

When the immune system overreacts to gluten and/or dairy, we call it a food allergy (when it raises the antibody IgE) or a food intolerance (when it raises the antibody IgG). Technical details I know, but there’s an important difference.

Food allergies can be life threatening, whereas food intolerances are life disturbing. Both can severely impact a person’s health and happiness, but only food allergies can pose an immediate threat to your child’s life. Scary stuff. So it’s important to know which your child has (many have both)!

With food allergies, the immune system reaction is immediate within minutes of exposure and circulating IgE antibodies can take days to clear from the body. 90% of all food allergic reactions are caused by 8 foods: gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Symptoms can involve the skin (hives, eczema), digestive system (vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain), and be life threatening (trouble swallowing or breathing, chest pain, passing out).

With food intolerances, the immune system reaction is delayed from 4 to 72 hours after exposure and circulating IgG antibodies may take months to clear from the body. Gluten and dairy are the most common food intolerances, and gluten is well known for causing an autoimmune disease called celiac disease. Food intolerance symptoms vary among affected individuals. For example, those with gluten intolerance can experience bloating, diarrhea, constipation, mouth sores, itchy rashes and/or headaches – just to name a few!

Inflammation, The Culprit in Common Dis-eases

Bottom line: BOTH food allergies and intolerances imbalance the immune system creating too much inflammation. Inflammation can be protective or destructive (like a protective vs. an overprotective parent). There’s a balance. Antibodies protect us – they’re our army tagging the bad guys, but with food allergies and intolerances their tagging innocent food! So instead of helping us, these antibodies “hurt” us, inflame us. Think of a friendly game of playground tag turned “ugly” by overzealous taggers, ending with a heaping pile of crying kids! Not good.

When your immune system spins out of control, you become imbalanced and inflamed.

Inflammation is a root problem in most chronic disease, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity. Asthma is inflammation of the lower airways; Eczema is inflammation of the skin; Inflammatory Bowel Disease is inflammation of the digestive tract. Get the picture? Inflammation is a REAL problem we need to address if we want to be happy and healthy!

Eliminating foods that inflame will help re-balance your child’s immune system, slowing down this out-of-control game of tag. As a result, her symptoms improve (or resolve), and she rebalances on her REAL health teeter-totter.

Discovering IgE and IgG reactive foods through testing (see below) is ideal to tailor your child’s diet, but it’s not always possible due to cost and practitioner accessibility. We’re working on building a practitioner database for you, so stay tuned! In the meantime…

It’s a lot of information to digest – I know.

Take a breather.

Then…

A.C.T. (Action Changes Things):

You can blood test your child to see if she has food allergies and/or food intolerances. My favorite lab is Alletess Medical Laboratory. Their Food Sensitivity and Allergy Panel tests 96 foods for IgG reactions, and 12 foods for IgE reactions. Contact them to find a practitioner in your area who uses their lab.

So, if your child is stuck in unhappy places, with wheezing, constipation, headaches, inattention or (you fill in the blank) – what’s your greatest obstacle to picking up the phone and calling Alletess Medical Laboratory today?

Even REAL Food Can Be Bad for You!

LoveBomb_AFewStepsCanTakeYouMiles

When we’re stuck in unhappy places (needing daily medications for allergies, asthma, attention, autism, diabetes, cholesterol, or just to go to sleep and stay asleep), we usually want the shortest (least painful) way out. NOW. That’s why we grab medications, they resolve symptoms quickly. BINGO.

Medication is a surface solution.

BUT..If we only address our child’s symptoms with medications, we fail to solve their underlying dis-ease. Take away the topical steroid cream, the eczema returns. Take a break from the stimulant medication, the inattention or hyperactivity comes back. If we want to stop medicating our child’s symptoms away, we need to dig DEEP beneath the surface of our child’s symptoms and see the REAL problems that need to be addressed. We need to heal from the inside out, not just treat surface symptoms.

It’s time to dig DEEP, beneath the surface.

Healing from the inside out is a process of fixing invisible imbalances to resolve visible symptoms. So let’s peek below the surface of your child’s symptoms, down to the invisible world inside her. There we’ll examine her root problems/imbalances, so we can learn why she’s stuck with wheezing, constipation, headaches, inattention or (you fill in the blank).

Before we take our deep dive, as your guide I need to show the overall map of where we’re heading. Only makes sense right? I call it your REAL Health RoadMap. Click for a quick overview of the 4 steps: Diet / Gut / Detox/Drain and Brain. Today we’re diving into Step 1 – Diet; it’s all about eating the right REAL food for you.

Brutal Truth: There’s no one right diet for everyone.

Sigh. No one prescription fits all. Nutrition is best when tailored specific to a person’s needs. Think of it as a suit. Take the suit off the rack and put it on. It fits. It’s good. But when tailored specifically for YOU, it fits on a whole new level (mmm-hmmm)! Same goes for food.

Eating REAL food is great; Eating the right REAL food for YOU is amazingly better!

Eating REAL food is great! To boost your health and happiness, eat REAL food. But sometimes, a lot of times, it’s not enough to eat REAL food. Your food needs to be tailored to meet your needs. Why? Because even REAL food can be bad for you! What?!?!? Yes. It’s true. Gluten can rip some guts to shreds. Dairy can be hard to digest. Anyone else feel 3 months pregnant after eating a slice of pizza? (Sigh.)

Some REAL Problem Foods

Tailoring my patients’ diets to fit their needs has been the #1 game-changer in reclaiming their health from allergies, asthma, eczema, autism, and ADHD (and a whole bunch of other things including: autoimmune disease, mood and sleep disorders, diabetes, and obesity). The top three foods I find stressing children O.U.T. are:

  1. Gluten
  2. Dairy
  3. Sugar (both cane sugar called sucrose & grain sugar called maltose)

What REAL foods are affecting your child?

It’s possible food is a player in your child’s eczema, constipation, behavior (or fill in the blank) without you realizing it. That’s why testing is ideal to tailor your child’s diet, but it’s not always possible due to cost and practitioner accessibility. We’re working on building a practitioner database for you, so stay tuned! In the meantime…

Our Menu Plan Program will walk you through a 1, 2, 3 phased approach to tailoring your child’s diet –  the first step and #1 game-changer in reclaiming your child’s health. BUT.. it’s often the hardest step, so we’ve divided it into 3 phases to help you find the right REAL food for your child.

Sounds crazy hard (I know).

Keep breathing.

We’ll get there.

A.C.T. (Action Changes Things):

Take a minute and list all the ways you’ve already changed your family’s diet.

More REAL?

Less sugar?

Gluten-free? Dairy-free?

I’d love to know…

What dietary changes helped your family? Any improvement in allergies, asthma, eczema? Attention, mood, sleep? Diabetes or excess weight? Or constipation, recurrent tummy aches, headaches, waxing/waning rashes, a nagging cough, or recurrent fevers?

If you’re feeling brave today, leave a comment and let me know.

Dig deep and share BIG. Sometimes we feel all alone, like a little fishy swimming upstream.

Next Up: Gluten and Dairy Can Be a REAL Problem, Part 1

To change the visible, You must FIRST change the invisible.

When we’re stuck in unhappy places (dis-ease), we usually want the shortest (least painful) way out. NOW. Agree?

I remember the very first-time my daughter wheezed, I couldn’t get that nebulizer to her mouth fast enough! But years later when she needed breathing treatment after breathing treatment, I knew I had to dig DEEPER.

To change the visible,
You must FIRST change the invisible.

To change her visible (symptoms), we had to change her invisible (root problems). Why? Imagine you have an apple tree, firmly planted in the ground, secure and stable.  Initially, the apple tree grows beautiful, ripe, juicy apples. Nothing better!  As the years progress, more and more “bad apples” appear. So you toss those apples. Then your tree ONLY bears bad apples.  Why? You never addressed the root of the problem. Did you nourish your tree? Water it?  Enrich it’s soil with organic compost? Protect it from wind or prune it? Plant another tree next to it to ensure pollination?

Healing from the inside out is a process:
Fix your invisible imbalances to resolve your visible symptoms.

When you’re healing from the inside out, it may seem like “nothing is happening people!”
But, it is. A lot shifts underneath the surface, inside your body, before your symptoms resolve. It’s a process, a journey.

You need a map and a guide!

Finding a healthcare practitioner willing to walk the REAL health journey with you is vital.  Healing can feel hard, like a climb up Mt. Everest, rather than a walk in the park. Your travels can feel overwhelming and finding an experienced guide who can illuminate the shortest least-painful path can really lighten your load. We’re building a practitioner database for you, so stay tuned! In the meantime…

If I were your guide, helping your child heal, before we even started out on our journey together, I’d show you the overall map of where we’re heading. Only makes sense, right?

Your REAL Health Roadmap

I use this with my patients. It’s based on the founding principle we are what we eat. But it takes it a few steps further: We are what we eat, PLUS what we digest, absorb and release (both physically and mentally). We’ll be diving into all the details, with examples of how to start moving in the right direction on your REAL Health Roadmap, but here’s a quick snapshot:

(1) Diet – eat the right REAL food for YOU

(2) Gut – restore digestive function so you can digest and absorb all that tailored nutrition

(3) Detox/Drain – dump the junk (aka clean house), so you can internally reorganize and find what you’re missing…health!

(4) Brain – balance your autonomic nervous system (your internal cab driver), so you’re not stuck in OVERDRIVE and crumble before you even cross the finish line to REAL health.

Keep an image of health close to your heart at all times.

Your REAL health journey may be long, so always hold that image of REAL health in your mind: your child balancing on the teeter-totter, back and forth, grinning ear to ear! She’s flowing, happy, and at ease. BRIGHT, BRAVE, and beautifully BALANCED.

A.C.T. (Action Changes Things):

IMMEDIATELY after you finish reading this blog post, grab your favorite photo of your child – one that represents health & happiness – and put in on your fridge. Remember, to change the visible, you must first change the invisible: nourish those roots! It can be a hard journey, so your child’s smiling face is your constant reminder that REAL health is possible. Period.

I’d love to know…

What picture of your child did you grab? How old is he? What is he doing? Smiling? Laughing? How does that picture make you feel?

If you’re feeling brave today, leave a comment and let me know.

You may just inspire that next someone to get movin and grab that beautiful picture of their child. Just what they need to remember…

REAL health is possible.
Breathe girl, you got this!
